How it works:
Synotic Otic includes a combination of fluocinolone acetonide (a corticosteroid) and DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide), a solvent that increases the absorption of the corticosteroid. Both ingredients have anti-inflammatory properties to reduce your pet’s symptoms, such as itching and irritated skin.
Cautions:

What is the most important information I should know about Synotic Otic: Synotic Otic is FDA approved for use in dogs only. Using an ear cleansing solution, thoroughly clean and dry the ear before using this medication. Synotic Otic is a prescription medication available as a 8ml dropper bottle. The usual dose is 4 to 6 drops in the ear twice a day for a maximum of 14 days.
What is Synotic Otic: Synotic Otic is a combination of fludrocortisone, a corticosteroid and DMSO, a solvent that increases the absorption of the corticosteroid. DMSO also has anti-inflammatory properties. Synotic Otic is used in dogs for the relief of itching and inflammation associated with acute and chronic otitis.
What should I discuss with my veterinarian before using Synotic Otic: Tell your veterinarian if your pet is allergic to this medication or to any of the individual ingredients. Avoid getting this medication in the dog's eyes. Tell your veterinarian if your pet is pregnant or lactating. This medication should not be used in a pregnant animal. Do not use Synotic Otic in animals with a perforated ear drum.
How should this medication be used: Use Synotic Otic exactly as directed by your veterinarian. If you do not understand the directions, ask your pharmacist or veterinarian to explain them to you. Do not allow this medication to come in contact with skin on your bare hand. DMSO is rapidly absorbed through the skin and will enter the blood stream causing an unpleasant taste in the mouth for a short period of time. Avoid contact with the treated area until it dries. Store Synotic Otic at room temperature. Keep the bottle properly capped.
What happens if I miss a dose: Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it almost time for the next regularly scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and apply the next one as directed. Do not use a double dose of this medication.
What happens if I overdose the pet: Symptoms of overdose may include; increased thirst, and urination; increased appetite and weight gain; panting; diarrhea; vomiting; and behavior changes. If an overdose is suspected call your veterinarian or veterinary emergency room.
What should I avoid while using Synotic Otic: Avoid contact with the eyes. Do not use in pregnant animals. Avoid accidental ingestion of the medication as corticosteroids with DMSO if given at high doses for an extended period of time can cause premature birth or birth defects. DMSO, a solvent, may damage plastics, fabrics, and other materials.
What are the possible side effects of Synotic Otic: If any of the following serious side effects occur, stop using Synotic Otic and seek emergency veterinary medical attention; an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips, tongue, or face, and hives). Other less serious side effects may occur. Continue using Synotic Otic and talk to your veterinarian if your pet develops an increased appetite or weight gain, panting, diarrhea, vomiting, and behavior changes. Other side effects may occur. Talk to your veterinarian about any side effects that seem unusual or bothersome to your pet.
What other drugs will affect Synotic Otic: Tell your veterinarian if your pet is being given any non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin, carprofen (Rimadyl, Novox), deracoxib (Deramaxx), Zubrin, and other prescription medications. Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with Synotic Otic. Talk to your veterinarian and pharmacist before giving any prescription or over the counter medications including vitamins and supplements to your pet.
